FILLER
What is Derma Filler?
In Aesthetic medicine Derma filler is a soft tissue filler that can be injected into the dermis or subcutaneous tissue to correct skin imperfections, to help fill in facial wrinkles, restore facial volume, and augment facial features: restoring a smoother appearance. Literally, "filler" means "filling": these substances are in fact injected into the dermis to fill and smooth out facial wrinkles and other signs of aging. Aimed at rejuvenating the skin, filler injections represent innovative and effective alternatives - or a valid support - to plastic surgery.
Most of these dermal fillers are temporary because they are eventually absorbed by the body. The most common dermal fillers today consist of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring polysaccharide that is present in skin and cartilage. Hyaluronic acid (HA) gives your skin volume and keeps it hydrated. With age, your body stops making hyaluronic acid. The function of HA is to bind water and act as a lubricant and shock absorbers in the parts of your body that are movable, as well as transporting nutrients and regulating your skin’s water balance. By restoring the body’s natural levels of Hyaluronic acid, derma filler smooths facial wrinkles and restores lost volume. Scientific studies have shown that Long-term use of hyaluronic acid can improve overall skin health, skin flexibility and elasticity. Filler is also a popular method to restore volume in the lips, which can lose their attractive fullness over time. A single treatment has been shown to work for up to a year, restoring a more youthful, radiant appearance.
History of Dermal Fillers
The concept of injectable fillers was first birthed as early as the 1800s, when medical professionals discovered the usefulness of taking fatty tissue from one area of the body, and injecting it into another area to restore lost volume to facial defects and scars.
The very first FDA-approved filler agent for cosmetic injection in the face was purified Bovine collagen in 1981. A number of injectable fillers were developed for use in permanent facial augmentation in the years to follow — silicone being one — and in 2003, the FDA approved the use of fibroblast-derived, purified human collagen for facial injection.
Modern day facial injectables include hyaluronic-based fillers like, Juvederm, Restylane, Revolax, Defyne, Belotero ,Voluma and , as well as calcium-based fillers/biostimulator such as Radiesse and poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA)based, biostimulator/ filler Sculptra. The duration of treatment results varies depending on the type of filler used.
Additionally, bio-stimulating fillers like Sculptra have been developed to volumize the skin naturally by arousing the body’s biological collagen-production mechanisms. This type of facial injectable treatment bears results that continue improving with time, frequently over the duration of two years or more.
How is a Filler procedure done?
Performed by our expert Aesthetic Practitioner, the procedure begins by applying a local anesthetic cream, which numbs the injection site and can cancel pain during and after the procedure. Then, using a thin needle or micro cannula, the practitioner injects small amounts of fillers under the dermis.
A series of small Injections are given around the area of your face being treated, which is then massaged. It might feel uncomfortable but should not be painful. The treatment usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes, depending on the area being treated. As soon as the series of injections is completed, you can return to normal activities. Generally, recovery lasts one to two days. Most patients are available to return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.
How long do a treatment last?
Results from a single treatment can be seen instantly and can last for up to 8 months, depending on the thickness of the product and a number of biological factors of an individual client.
What are the side effects of Dermal Filler?
Side effects are minimal and typically relate to the local injection. Swelling or bruising, temporary numbness or redness. Palpable lumps or hard areas at the injection sites. Hypersensitivity reaction that can seem like an allergic reaction with hives and swelling. In rare instances more serious complications may occur such as a vascular occlusion which is why it is important to only see a trained Aesthetic Professional who can manage complications and can dissolve the filler immediately, if needed.
